Dragons win by 37 runs
Prologue
Joshiley Dragons were having a 4-1 win/loss record before the match,and after a gap of 2 weeks, the players re-assembled to play the penultimate league match of the Gents Winter League. The mood was upbeat in general with players flocking from all parts of Prague and even outside to play their respective group matches.
The Team
With Kelwin nursing a broken hand, and Mahesh back to India holidaying in India, it was a real task to find the 6th player to complete the team. Pravin,Prabu,Kurian and myself were still available, Vaibhav, fresh from his India trip, and raring to play the match made the first 5. But how can you discount Siva, the cool, charismatic, and dashing e-banking Senior Project Manager. He fit in the 6th spot to the T, and was very much disasspointed, that this is the only game he could play, so were we.
Toss
Pravin was still on his way to the ground, and by the time of the scheduled start of the match at 12:30, we only had 5 players to play with. Mayur & deepak were also missing putting the captain in a spot of bother. Luckily, we won the toss and could bat first, giving some time for Pravin to join the team.
Batting
Satya & Kurian started the innings, and had a enjoyable outing hitting the Vinohrady bowlers for some lusty blows, but also getting out as many as 4 times. Still, their pair score of 47 was overall best in the series so far for the two. Then came the partnership of the match, Siva playing his first and only match of the tournament, alongwith the hard hitter of the team, Pravin. Both of them clobbered the Vinohrady all over, with Siva showing great maturity playing indoor league, and Pravin as usual hitting lusty blows for 5's and 7's. Their oveall score was 58 and the best for a player in debut. Prabu & Vaibhav had a lot of fun batting last, scoring 46 runs and getting out as many as 6 times, wonder they would have scored atleast a 60 have they not enjoyed themselves to such extent. Anyways, 151 was a good enough total to defend against the development side of Vinohraday Club.
Bowling
Siva,who last played the game during riverside tournaments last year, showed again, that he can still bowl fast, and his opening combination with Prabu laid the foundation for the other bowlers to come. We just needed to bowl at the right areas, and even though Vinohrady made a defiant attempt, they could score 49, 34 and 31, taking their aggregate to 114 runs.
Captain's Man of the Match
Some standout performances today
1. Pravin's lusty blow in the middle overs & ever reliable behind the stumps
2. Prabu's breakthroughs in middle overs & end overs
But I am sure, Pravin & Prabu have potential to do much more, as so the other guys, Kurian, Vaibhav & Mahesh, and I am looking forward for each of them to shine in the semifinals & finals,which will really separate the men amongst boys.
Today's man of the match goes to the undying & ever youthful spirit of Siva, who really showed us how to play the game.
Next Match
We play our last league match on 20th March at 11:00 am. This would be last opportunity to work on the weakness , mostly on the fielding and power hitting, which can still be better. Next week is another break, so enjoy the rest.
Magic Moments of the day
This high scoring game had surprisingly, many magic moements, mainly because of presence of 2 lady players in Vinohrady Cricket team
1. Pravin, in his ever enthusiastic and energetic style, turned around to take a non-existent 2nd run,when already 7 runs were scored, and a run out would have taken the score to -5, ran effervecently, only to find young Ruska, and in a true dramatic way, ran over her to reach the ground. Thankfully, no one was injured, as Dragons could hardly afford another injury after Kelwin, and the young girl also survived the scare.
2. Siva took a magnificent 1 handed full dived catch , but only thing, that came of the back wall, and hence was not out. But full marks for the effort, it would have made Johnty Rhodes proud, had he seen the effort.
3. Vaibhav claimed that he and Prabu will score atleast 80 runs in 5 overs, but was caught in the beauty trap as wickets fell one after the other, and Vaibhav looking around the corner to check what the young girl was up to. Needs a bit more focus on cricket buddy.
All in all, a good game of cricket and now looking forward for the last one on 20th March.
